OPERATIONS LINKED TO SECURITY AND CUSTOMS INSPECTION
According to IATA (2005), security in air cargo transport is different from passenger security since it is difficult to review all of it with current technology and there are many agents involved. Also, there are several types of threats, such as: • Unpredictable itinerary. Itineraries unknown until the last minute and these are not available to the public like those of passengers. • Unpredictable routes. Routes unknown until the last minute and the cargo can be transported by different means. • Cargo handling. There are multiple opportunities to discover, for example, IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices). Employees are trained to detect discrepancies. To minimize the aforementioned threats, several techniques were developed for the inspection of goods, since with current technology it is not possible to review 100% of the cargo because it would delay the flow of the cargo to unacceptable levels, and airports would require more space. Techniques used for screening include manual screening, conventional X-rays, X-rays for large dimensions, EDS (Explosive Detection Systems), ETS (Explosive Trace Detection Systems), metal detectors, dog detection, and various technologies. emerging. All of these techniques were first developed for inspection of passenger flights and later applied to cargo transportation.
